Formed by students from the local primary, secondary schools and university, the Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) was founded in 1997 by a group of music teachers and former players from the Macao Chamber Orchestra.
Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra
Since its inception, the orchestra has given more than hundred public performances and strives to keep its initial objectives: to provide orchestral training and performing opportunities for the local youth, exchange their experiences, cultivate and promote their interests, as well as the standard in music appreciation and performance, therefore giving opportunity to develop their musical talents.
Music Director & Chief Conductor: Veiga Jardim
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Oswaldo Veiga Jardim initially studied piano and began appearing as a conductor at the age of seventeen. Described by the South China Morning Post as “sparkling and energetic”, Veiga Jardim has attracted intense acclaim from critics and the general public in his appearances conducting the major choirs and orchestras in his native land. Veiga Jardim came to Macao in 1989 where he played a pivotal role, as Conductor and Artistic Director of the Macao Chamber Orchestra and founder of the Macao Sinfonietta, in promoting musical appreciation in the enclave. In 2007, he was awarded the Medal of Culture by the government of MSAR for his outstanding services to music in Macao.
Piano Soloist: Lam Ieng-ieng
Born in China, Lam Ieng-Ieng began her piano lessons at the age of four. In 1992, after winning the grand prize in the Macau Youth Music Competition, she became the recipient of Oriental Foundation Scholarship to further her piano studies with Gabriel Kwok, Head of the Keyboard Studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In 2000, she was invited to perform with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at the Ceremony commemorating the 1st Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. Lam has studied chamber music with famous artists such as Suren Bagratuni, Ko Iwasaki, Stefan Milenkovich, Dan-Wen Jiang and members of Pacifica String Quartet. Her most recent collaborative work is with world-renowned classical saxophonist Debra Richtmeyer at the 15th World Saxophone Congress in July 2009, where they premiered In the first, spinning place (2000/2009) for Saxophone and piano by Welsh-born composer Hilary Tann, a piece that was commissioned and premiered the original 2000 concerto by Professor Richtmeyer.
