One of the most hotly anticipated cultural events on the Beijing stage this year, the Embassy of the Republic of Cape Verde, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of China, China Arts and Entertainment Group and Wu Promotion, is bringing Cesária Évora, Mayra Andrade and their support musician, Manuel Lopes Andrade (alias Tcheka) to Beijing to perform for the first time.
Césaria Evora, also known as "the Queen of Cape Verde", renowned for her emotional, gently melancholic songs, is hailed as one of the most influential black voices in the world. She has become something of a living legend in her homeland and is frequently compared to divas like Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf, but her voice is all her own and holds an inescapable fascination for the listeners.
Mayra Andrade, another brilliant vocal from Cape Verde, has clearly let go of her moorings and gone where the trade winds have always led her. Her childhood was immersed in the greatest voices from Cape Verde, but her music draws on all possible sources "from radical free jazz to Brazilian music."
Manuel Lopes Andrade, known as Tcheka the vanguard of Cape Verdean music is famous for transposing traditional percussive beats onto his guitar and reworking the rhythms of batuku into his original compositions.
Through the beautiful voices of two different generations, the three singers will bring to Chinese audiences a taste of Cape Verde"s unique mixture of European and African elements, combined with exotic beauty and emphatic music atmosphere, with traditional sounds of their homeland.
