Der Ring des Nibelungen

Italy at World Expo 2010 Shanghai

The Ring Shanghai Premiere, 16th-19th & 21st-24th Sept 2010

Der Ring des Nibelungen

Wu Promotion is proud to present “The Ring of the Nibelung” (Der Ring des Nibelungen) by Cologne Opera, the largest cultural programme to present on the world stage of Expo 2010 in Shanghai.  This significant musical event with two cycles, each promising four unforgettable nights of music drama on 16th - 19th September & 21st - 24th September, 2010.

In an undertaking that will require the relocation and effort of 315 artists including the producers, stage designers, costume designers, makeup artists and technicians would indeed, declare this performance of an exceptional exertion and scale.  Cologne Opera will remain in China for a month and its 30 containers will be moved to China in a voyage lasting 21 days and spanning 14,000 km.  Thanks to our local partners in Shanghai: Shanghai City Dance Company Limited, Shanghai Grand Theatre and Xin Min Group and two years of preparation, Wu Promotion has finally realised the ambitious mission of the bringing of the Ring to China.

After the successful China Tour of Cologne Philharmonic at the end of 2007, the idea of presenting one of the world’s biggest opera at the world’s largest Expo ever came to Mr. Jiatong Wu and Mr. Markus Stenz (Chief Conductor of Cologne Philharmonic and Music Director of Cologne Opera) while they were enjoying the impressive skyline of Shanghai.

In 2005, Nürnberg Opera premiered the concert version opera of the Ring at the Beijing International Festival.  This year, Cologne Opera’s Ring in Shanghai, on the contrary, will perform 2 complete cycles of the Ring each will spread across 4 nights.

It is a rare occasion for any resident opera to tour with such as large scale.  Wu Promotion has worked with Cologne Opera and local partners for more than two years to try and realise the Ring project and the opportunity presented itself when it happened to be the occasion that Cologne Opera will renovate of three year staring from September 2010.
