Production of 2006-07 National Stage Project of China Based on one of the Chinese Four Great Classical Novels with music composed by Academy Award winning composer, Su Cong.
The Dance Written in the 18th century by Cao Xueqin , the Dream of Red Chamber depicts a feudal family sage that involves more than 400 characters and a wide range of social customs of the time. At the heart of the book is a Romeo and Juliet story among three dramas, which has been adapted and abridged into 90 minutes: the creators and choreographer use the poetic theme of Red Chamber and design every dance action to expose the “dreamlike” world of the main characters. The main characters in this story, Baoyu, Daiyu,Baochai, Wang Xifeng, Mother Jia,Jia Zheng and Grandma Liu, show the audience their fortune, emotion and feeling with professional dancing skills. Unique conception, together with strong visual impact, makes the dram dance the Dream of the Red Chamber a wordless world between reality and fantasy.
Director & Choreographer: Zhao Ming Graduated from Chinese Ethnic Dance Department of Beijing Dance Academy, Zhao Ming is a premiere choreographer-director in China as well as the top prizewinner of both Lotus Dance Competition and Wenhua National Dance Awards. Zhao was the choreographer of the dance drama the Shining Red Star and Farewell My Concubine. His exquisite expression in dance action and excellent command of montage has contributed to the strong visual impact and the magnificent stage of the Drama of the Red Chamber.
Music Composer: Su Cong Since 1991, Su Cong has been a professor of film and media composition at the newly founded State Film Academy in the Stuttgart area. Together with Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Byrne, Su won the Best Original Score Academy Award for the Bernardo Bertolucci film the Last Emperor in 1987. He has scored other film soundtracks, mostly for Asian film, such as for the film Mobile Phone directed by Feng Xiaogang in 2004. Su utterly abandoned the Chinese traditional method of composition to create a “Dream-state” with the music, which he infuses through the entire play leaving audiences feeling the mystery.
