Stockholm Chamber Trio & Wirldbirds & Peacedrums, Sweden, 2008

Tour Dates: 2008

Mariam Wallentin- vocal and various instruments

Andreas Werliin- drums, vocal and various instruments

The Stockholm Chamber Trio was formed in 2007 by three young students at the Royal College of Music. The premiere concert was held later that year at The Royal Academy of Music’s concert hall, Nybrokajen 11, in Stockholm.

Ever since, the trio’s repertoire has continuously been expanded. Besides the classic compositions for their combinations of instruments contemporary composers have been encouraged to write for the ensemble, and the members make arrangements of music spanning from Baroque to Klezmer. Their special interpetation of the musical theme from Emir Kusturica’s movie “Black cat, white cat” has become a favorite of concert audiences.

The trio has given concerts at a number of stages in and around the Swedish capital, and will, in the spring of 2008, make an extensive tour in the district of Gävleborg. Besides playing in the Stockholm Chamber Trio, its members are well-established in Sweden’s concert life, performing as soloists and in a variety of chamber music combinations all over the nation.

Emil Jonason, clarinet

Born in 1983, Emil Jonason is one of Sweden’s most widely praised clarinetists. Ever since he won a nationwide competition at the age of 17, he has been in demand as a soloist with professional orchestras in Sweden as well as abroad, including the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin in Moscow. In May 2008, he will be featured with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, playing John Corigliano’s clarinet concerto. In 2004, Emil Jonason won the Prize of the 21 Century Piece at the Lions’ Europe Soloist Competition. In 2005, he won the Solofoni Prize and was elected “Young Soloist of the Year”. In 2006, he won First Prize in the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Competition. This year he will be the Swedish contestant in the EBU competition.

Emma Gilljam, piano

Born in 1981, Emma Gilljam began studying the piano at the age of seven. In the spring of 2007, she received a Master’s Degree at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where she has studied with Stefan Bojsten and Mats Widlund. Awarded several prizes and scholarships, she has taken great interest in interpretation of songs, besides performing in various chamber music combinations and as soloist with orchestras and in recitals. She has been featured at numerous festivals, and this year will be playing the Grieg piano concerto on tour with the Gävleborg Symphony Orchestra.

Daniel Migdal, violin

Daniel Migdal was only four years old when he made his first attempts to play the violin, and he was only seven when he first appeared on the nationwide television in Sweden, playing a sonata by Paganini. Born in 1986, he is currently studying with professor Henryk Kowalski at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He has been awarded a number of scholarship and prizes, and has been in demand as a soloist as well as in various chamber music combinations. Currently he is performing on tour in a duo combinations with guitarist Jacob Kellerman.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums

What a voice! What percussion! What a terrific combination! The young duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums has been selected as the “Jazz in Sweden” representatives of the year 2008.

With this original combination, now and then with the addition of odd instruments such as toy-piano, singer Mariam Wallentin and drummer Andreas Werliin have become a sensation, not only on the Swedish scene but also internationally.

Their Jazz in Sweden-album, The Snake, was released by Caprice Records in March 2008. It is built of distinctive compositions of their own, structurally reminiscent of pop, rock and blues, but immediately expanded and made more profound by way of creative processing. The outcome is music with strong charisma, displaying improvisations moving in various directions, balancing the clear with the obscure, the complex with the simple, and attracting full attention from start to finish.
