Yuri Honing Trio Biography The Yuri Honing Trio, founded in 1990, made their international breakthrough in 1996 with the release of Star Tracks, an album based on pop songs; later followed by Sequel. Both albums reached sales far beyond any expectation and gave the trio a place in every jazz encyclopedia published since. While touring in more than 50 countries around the world, the Yuri Honing Trio have built a unique personal style which is based on jazz, pop music and non-western musical traditions. These three musicians comprise one of the most successful Dutch jazz groups of today. The trio centers around Yuri Honing, a brilliant saxophone player and composer who is considered one of the leading Dutch voices in jazz since the nineties. Besides Yuri Honing, the trio consists of: Ruben Samama, Holland's most extraordinary bass player; and Joost Lijbaart, one of the most innovative drummers in Holland today. Yuri Honing ![]() The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD and the Oxford Introduction to jazz acknowledge Yuri Honing as Holland's most important saxophone player. He has a discography of almost 30 titles and touring experience in over 50 countries. Honing has played and recorded with greats such as Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden and Paul Bley. In 2001, Honing received the Edison Jazz Award (Dutch Grammy) for his recording Seven, featuring Paul Bley, Gary Peacock and Paul Motion. Ruben Samama ![]() Born into a musical family in 1985, bass-player Ruben Samama started to play and write music from the age of twelve. Samama studied double-bass and classical composition at the Royal Conservatory in Hague where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in 2007. Samama then earned his Master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music where he studied on a presidential scholarship. In 2007, Samama released his debut album, Hotaru, on OAPrecords which was internationally received with 5 star reviews.Samama performs internationally with Colombian singer Lucia Pulido and the European formation Subtone. Samama has been fortunate to share the stage with musicians such as Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Steve Slagle, Ambrose Akimunsire, Alexandra Grimal, Ted Poor and Fabian Almazan. Ruben has been a recipient of: PB Culture foundation scholarship; VSB foundation scholarship; the Fulbright foundation scholarship; NFPK+ scholarship; and AJTA award 2006. Joost Lijbaart ![]() Born in Amsterdam, Joost Lijbaart started drumming at age seven. During his study at the conservatory in Hilversum, he went to Senegal to take lessons in African percussion with the legendary DuDu and Ali un D'Aya Rose. Lijbaart is a versatile drummer who uses many different influences in his playing. In 1993, he won the 15th Europe Jazz Contest with the Nicolas Thys trio. For this performance he received the best drummer award. In 1995, the double CD, The Sextet Live, was released. In 1996, he toured the album in the Netherlands and in 1998 toured China; when a documentary was made by Dutch film maker, Jop Pannekoek. In 2002, Lijbaart won the Dutch jazz competition with the Agog trio and was awarded as best soloist in the contest by American drummer Elvin Jones. In 2003, Lijbaart undertook a major project with Dutch choreographer Anouk van Dijk; a ballet for four dancers and four musicians live on stage. In January 2006, Lijbaart with the group, Yuri Honing Wired Paradise, released a double CD titled Temptation.
