Tour Dates: 21 May - 30 May, 2010 Eivind Aadland - Chief Conductor Eivind Aadland - Chief Conductor Trondheim Symphony Orchestra (TSO) Takes its place in the extensive musical heritage of the City of Trondheim, Norway. Indeed, before the 19th century Trondheim was the main focal point for sacred music in Scandinavia. This encouraged many significant musicians of their time to settle here. The growth and expansion of European music culture during the 18th and 19th centuries was also mirrored within the city. This period saw the foundation of several music societies. TSO itself was founded in 1909. The development of the orchestra gained impetus with the jubilee of St. Olav in 1930. In more recent times TSO has established a solid position as an inspiring impulse not only for the local musical life but for the country as a whole. Recent successful tours in Germany, Austria, Spain and the CzechRepublic with high artistic quality have enhanced the orchestra’s international reputation. Trondheim Symphony Orchestra has worked with conductors such as Daniel Harding (TSO’s chief conductor in 1997/2000), the composers Krzysztof Penderecki, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Thomas Adés, Walter Weller, Aldo Ceccato, Terje Mikkelsen, Jin Wang, Ole Kr. Ruud, En Shao, Takuo Yuasa, Bramwell Tovey, Christopher Seaman, Andras Ligeti, Mikko Franck, Andrew Manze, Andrey Boreyko, Andris Nelsons and Muhai Tang. With the latter the orchestra has recorded a prize-winning disc with the famous Norwegian mezzo, Randi Stene. The orchestra has been fortunate to work with a long list of celebrated soloists in recent times which include Mstislav Rostropovitsj, Anne Sophie Mutter, Bryn Terfel, Rolando Villazon, Placido Domingo, Maxim Vengerov, Leif Ove Andsnes, Truls Mørk, Boris Berezovsky, Arve Tellefsen, John Lill, Stephen Hough, Peter Jablonski, Christian Lindberg, Ole Edvard Antonsen, Olli Mustonen, Solveig Kringlebotn, Håkan Hardenberger, Evelyn Glennie and the famous jazz musician, John Patitucci. From 2007, TSO continued its growth through a closer co-operation with the Trondheim Soloists which resulted in an increased complement of 90 musicians. The Chief conductor and artistic leader is currently Eivind Aadland.
An intuitive and charismatic musician, Eivind has a great feeling for overall structure whilst bringing out the subtleties of the score. A pupil of Yehudi Menhuin, he was encouraged to pursue a career as a conductor by Mariss Jansons and studied with Jorma Panula. Music Director of the European Union Chamber Orchestra from 1987-1997, he directed from the violin in major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe. Orchestras Eivind has worked with Oslo Philharmonic, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, Gothenburg Symphony, SWR Stuttgart, WDR Cologne, Melbourne Symphony, Iceland Symphony and Orchestre National de Belgique. His Opera experience includes Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte, Die Fledermaus (Oslo Opera) La Bohème (Trondheim Symphony). 
He has enjoyed successful artistic collaborations with many conductors including Marek Janowski, Ivan Fischer, Paavo Berglund, Kirill Petrenko, Yakov Kreizberg, Mariss Jansons, Stephane Denève and Kurt Sanderling. A committed chamber musician, Henning Kraggerud also performs both on violin and on viola at major international festivals, collaborating with musicians such as Stephen Kovacevich, Kathryn Stott, Leif Ove Andsnes, Jeffrey Kahane, Truls Mørk and Martha Argerich. His recordings include an acclaimed release of the complete Unaccompanied Violin Sonatas of Ysaÿe for Simax. Winner of the Spellemann CD Award. His recordings for Naxos include Grieg’s Violin Sonatas (Naxos 8.553904) and Norwegian Favourites (Naxos 8.554497) for violin and orchestra. Now in his 7th season, Eivind Aadland has completed the full Beethoven and Mahler symphony cycles.
Born in Oslo in 1973, the Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud studied with Camilla Wicks and Emanuel Hurwitz and is a recipient of Norway’s prestigious Grieg Prize, the Ole Bull Prize and the Sibelius Prize. He is a professor at the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo, and appears as a soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.
