The Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra – the first radio symphony orchestra of the Soviet Union with a long history – embarked on a tour in China between December 29, 2019 and January 4, 2020. Led by Thomas Sanderling, the orchestra gave six concerts for nearly 10,000 audiences in the venues of Guangzhou Opera House, Forbidden City Concert Hall, Tianjin Grand Theatre, and Jiangsu Grand Theatre, to celebrate the arrival of 2020.

Besides Capriccio Italien and the suites from three famous ballets (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker) , the program also included excerpts from Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades. The concerts were in honor of Tchaikovsky’s 180th birthday in 2020, and the orchestra received much acclaim for its most authoritative interpretation of the composer’s works from the Chinese audiences, who have a deep love for Tchaikovsky’s music.
