The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra honored as “a heavenly orchestra for classical music”, visited China for the 3rd time in the orchestra’s 177 years of history. The 12-days tour was led by two conductors, Christian Thielemann and Andrés Orozco-Estrada with Chinese pianist Yuja Wang as the soloist. The orchestra performed eight concerts reaching 13,000 music fans while presenting the legacy of the “matte golden timber” and creating countless unforgettable moments and surprises. October 21-22, the 33rd Macao International Music Festival, Macao Cultural Centre The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra “reunited” with Macao audiences after two years, thanks to the invitation of Instituto Cultural de Macau. The concerts were presented at the 33rd Macao International Music Festival, which also marked the beginning of the 2019 China Tour of the orchestra.
October 24-25, Guangdong Xinghai Concert Hall It was the third time for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to visit Guangzhou. Daniel Froschauer, Chairman of the ensemble, expressed himself emotionally, “We met so many old friends and music fans, who made our musicians really feel like home”. The orchestra also brought something new for the third visit, i.e., Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No.8 in C minor. On the evening of October 25, the masterpiece received its China premiere under the baton of Christian Thielemann.
October 27-28, Shanghai Oriental Art Center From all past tours, Shanghai has been the city most visited by the orchestra; this time they gave a special concert featuring works by the Strauss family and Richard Strauss, and it was the only concert with such program in the 2019 China Tour.
October 29-30, Wuhan Qintai Concert Hall The debut concert of the orchestra at the beautiful Qintai Concert Hall of Wuhan unveiled the mystery of the orchestra. Under the baton of Christian Thielemann, Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No.8 in C minor was staged at the opening night of the 8th Qintai Music Festival.
Some extra activities complemented the concerts; Thanks to the initiative of Wuhan Qintai Concert Hall and Xinghai Concert Hall, the orchestra had the chance to offer some master classes and cultural activities, which further cemented the long-standing relationship between the orchestra and China. At the masterclass (in collaboration with Xinghai Conservatory of Music and the 8th Qintai Music Festival)
Xinhai Concert Hall also arranged “cuisine classes”, from which the musicians gained the knowledge of the food culture in Guangzhou. Head chefs from the Garden Hotel gave well-prepared classes on how to make dim sum, egg custard tarts and shrimp dumplings.
