The two-night symphonic event “Berliner Philharmoniker in Shanghai 2025” concluded triumphantly on November 15–16 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, where both concerts played to a full house and sustained applause.

As their only stop in Mainland China during its Asia tour, the Berliner Philharmoniker—led by Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko—presented two meticulously curated programs showcasing contrasting musical worlds.

The opening night featured Janáček’s Lachian Dances, Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin, and Stravinsky’s Petrushka—three iconic masterpieces of the twentieth century. With propulsive rhythmic tension, vivid orchestral colors, and profound dramatic expression, the orchestra guided Shanghai audiences through a powerful panorama of Eastern European musical imagination.

The closing performance on the following evening unfolded from the poetic drama of Schumann’s Manfred Overture to the gentle radiance of Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, culminating in the monumental finale of Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 in C minor. Through a unified orchestral sound, structural clarity, and its unmistakable German-Austrian tradition, the Berliner Philharmoniker once again captivated Shanghai with its extraordinary artistry.

This engagement marked the orchestra’s fifth visit to Shanghai—following appearances in 2005, 2011, 2017, and 2024—and continued the deep cultural ties established through its Shanghai residency launched last year. About 4,000 audience witnessed the triumphant return of this world-renowned ensemble, immersing themselves in a musical journey that transcended time, culture, and borders from the very first note.
