Jingju Theater Company of Beijing Celebrates Legacy of Mei Lanfang in Russia

Following the success of its US tour "120th Anniversary of Mei Lanfang" in August, the Jingju Theater Company of Beijing toured in Russia.

Following the success of its US tour "120th Anniversary of Mei Lanfang" in August, the Jingju Theater Company of Beijing, led by master Mei Lanfang’s son Mei Baojiu, toured in Russia from October 8 to 16, 2014. Retracing the artistic footsteps of the master, they contributed to promoting the art of Peking Opera in Russia and furthering cultural dialogue between the two neighboring countries.

In Moscow and St. Petersburg, the scenes are full house

On this tour, the artists presented the famous Mei School play Lady Mu Guiying Takes Command and Legend of the White Snake, a classic performance that combines drama and action, for Russian audiences.Their performances at the Moscow State Opera and Ballet Theatre for Young Audience and the Saint Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre won enthusiastic applause from local audiences.

Promotional work for the tour was well underway in Moscow before the performance: an elaborately decorated promotional bus drove by the main touristic sites in Moscow, such as the Red Square, capturing the attention of curious onlookers. Dressed in their exquisite Peking Opera costumes, the artists appeared on the streets of the city, providing locals with an up-close encounter with the beauty of Peking Opera. Many people were attracted by the stunning ensemble and took the unique opportunity to interact closely with the artists.

As the "120th Anniversary of Mei Lanfang" tour was very popular in both Moscow and Saint Petersburg, seats for performances were sold out and even standing tickets were hard to get; one reporter joked that even " hanging tickets" would sell. Performing on an elaborate stage dressed in lavish costumes, the artists dazzled audiences with their exquisite vocals and elegant movements. Throughout the performances, audience members yelled out "Bravo!" in Chinese, which many of them had just learned. During the curtain calls, audiences broke into loud cheers and applause. One elderly Russian lady, who had watched the Peking Opera play Romance of the Western Chamber in China, attended the performance dressed in a green Chinese traditional jacket. The "120th Anniversary of Mei Lanfang" tour not only showcased the glory of Peking Opera to audiences in Russia, it also contributed significantly to the promotion of Peking Opera in Russia and cultural exchanges between China and Russia. According to Mr. Wu Jiatong, General Manager of Wu Promotion, which is the main organizer of this tour, 2015 is the 80th anniversary of Mei Lanfang’s debut in the Soviet Union in 1935. The Jingju Theater Company of Beijing will be planning performances in Russia to commemorate this occasion, bringing more classic works by the master to Russia. In 1935, Mei Lanfang gave sell-out performances at major venues in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, which received rave reviews.
