Between August 9th and 17th, 2015, organized by Wu Promotion, Guangzhou Youth Orchestra (GYO) toured in Germany for the first time. Under the baton of Jing Huan, artistic director of GYO and resident conductor of Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra (GSO), and featuring the young stars Haochen Zhang (piano), Liwei Qin (cello), and Lei Jia (Sheng), the youth orchestra participated in Young Euro Classic and staged two concerts in Dr. Houch’s Konservatorium, Frankfurt.
Young Euro Classic has been held for the last 16 years, and it is one of the most important youth music festivals in Europe. This year’s edition was attended by 18 youth orchestras from all over the world, of which many quite well known. After the youth orchestra from the Central Conservatory of Music and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, GYO is the third Chinese youth orchestra to perform in Young Euro Classic.
The programme for Young Euro Classic on August 15th in Konzerthaus Berlin, was carefully selected by artistic Jing Huan. As they wanted to greet the German audience with German works, but at the same time introduce them to Chinese compositions, GYO presented Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, Op. 28 (TrV 171), Qigang Chen’s Er Huang (Concerto for Piano and Orchestra) and Lin Zhao’s Duo (Concerto for Cello, Sheng and Orchestra ) as well as Igor Stravinsky’s <The Firebird> Suite No.2(1999). The concert was recorded live by RBB and Deutschland radio Kultur, and broadcasted through Kultur Radio. Guangzhou Youth Orchestra was founded in 2011 by Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra (GSO), as the first Chinese youth orchestra initiated by a professional orchestra. The young musicians enjoy a close working relationship with Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. The tour of GYO, hence took place in close cooperation with GSO and musicians of GSO accompanied the tour, to support the new generation of Guangzhou musicians. Principle director of GSO, Qing Chen, was very satisfied with the Germany tour of GYO and praised the young musicians for their musicality and professionalism.
Young Euro Classic, is of course also a great opportunity to listen to your peers from all over the world. GYO therefore attended three concerts as well as two rehearsals during this more than two week long music festival.
